Yann Viet

Guitarist and instructor Yann Viet was born in 1966 and started playing the piano at six, before turning to the guitar at around ten years old. He was first interested by folk music and french chanson, then he studied jazz, harmony and improvisation in his early teens, attending Pierre Cullaz‘s education. From the age of eighteen, he started bands, began to play in public and to give lessons.
He has a very large range of influences such Pat Metheny, Larry Carlton, Philip Catherine, Chet Baker, but also Mark Knopfler, Jeff Beck, Didier Lockwood and Keith Jarrett regarding instrumentalists… Definitely Georges Brassens and Barbara for their poetic dimension and even some writers, painters and sculptors since for him, music is first and foremost something linked to storytelling and to matter and space occupation as well.
In 2010, he recorded a first album, La Javanaise, including french chanson, jazz and pop classics revisited. On this disc, we can hear the excellent bass guitar player Marc Eliard, the very popular Sylvain Gontard on the trumpet, Yann Viet on the guitar and Brazilian percussionist Julio Goncalves on some tracks. This instrumental ensemble was inspired by some records by Chet Baker who liked particularly this kind of trios, without battery. This band had the chance to play as openings for Bireli Lagrene, André Ceccarelli and Angelo Debarre shows…
In May 2016, Yann Viet released Life On Mars?, opus that received a very good welcome from the press and highlights even more his qualities as a composer and arranger. Beside Marc Eliard (bass guitar and accordion) and Sylvain Gontard (trumpet and bugle), drummer Michel Julien, William Lecomte (Jean-Luc Ponty’s pianist, also playing melodica and clavietta on this album), trumpeter Gilles Relisieux, and famous percussionist Jaco Largent took part in this record as well.
An album in duo with cellist-bassist Olivier Soubeyran is in progress and should be available by the end of 2017. He is also working on an album solo for 2018.
From an educational point of view, and beside the places where he teaches on a regular basis, he provides master classes from time to time and manages a YouTube channel, very popular among musicians from France and other countries, due to the high quality of its videos.

“With Marc Eliard, his bassist, the artist gifts us with a wonderful voyage, abolishing boundaries between genres to take us far far away…. Great french songs, when they are perfectly chosen, have a lot in common with jazz, often nourished by popular airs, hummed in the street, without elitism, for pure pleasure. At the source, a fresh and open attitude, preserved by Yann in his second album, far from any label, just remaining solar and generous.”
